(TEXT : Exodus 20:12)
Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.
FOCUS :
God must be honoured at first and God Himself asked us to honour our parents for our days to be long and blessed in the land of the living. Our parents have lots to say in our journey of LIFE, and God has more to say in our journey of FAITH. So, honouring our parents it is not optional, it is a command even from God.
1 Samuel 2:30 Wherefore the LORD God of Israel saith, I said indeed that thy house, and the house of thy father, should walk before me for ever: but now the LORD saith, Be it far from me; for them that honour me I will honour, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed.
In addition, no matter how old a child can be, you can never be older than your parents; and that is why experience is the best teacher. If you honour your parents, your own children will also, sooner or later honour you in return. When God asked us to honour our parents, He said so, so that we can be a “blessed child and not cursed child.”
Matthew 15:3-5 But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition? For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death. But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me;
Finally, if you are finding it so difficult to honour your parents, can I announce to you that, you will also find it so difficult to succeed in the journey of life. Because your success will only come through your “total submission” in honouring your parents. Your parents might not take full supports\responsibility of you while you are growing up as a child under them, but just obey God and do your own part and let God be the judge, not you. God knows why you are born into that your family, and He has a purpose for you in that family. So, honour God in the lives of your parents and you will be rewarded greatly for obeying God.
Proverbs 13:18 Poverty and shame shall be to him that refuseth instruction: but he that regardeth reproof shall be honoured.
Proverbs 15:33 The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom; and before honour is humility.
